Skein 31

A special effect by blending color as well as two different fibers

Fiber:  wool, silk
Type:  Corriedale fleece and commercial bleached tussah sliver
Preparation for Spinning:  Fleece was washed in detergent, rinsed and dyed with yellow acid dye.  Tussah was dyed navy blue.  Fibers were dried and then picked together using a triple picker.  Picked fiber was drumcarded into batts, split and carded again until optimum color blending was achieved.  Finished batts were drafted into sliver for spinning.
Reason for Choice of this Sample:  Soft corriedale wool blends well with silk.  Both fibers dye well.  The occasional neb formed in carding the navy silk adds spots of color interest.
Type of Spinning:  supported long draw
Equipment Used:  picker, drumcarder, bobbin flyer wheel
Direction of Twist:  Z, S
Number of Plies:  2
Weight of Skein:
Finishing:  Yarn was wound onto a  skeiner, washed, and hung to dry.
Length of yarn:
Suggested Uses:  This yarn could be used for a knit fulled wide-brimmed hat, or a knit hat, “head hugger” style.  Either of these finished pieces would make use of the yarns best features—color, softness and warmth.
