Type: Black Bluefaced Leicester fleece, Angora combings,
commercial angora top
Preparation for Spinning: Fleece was washed in detergent,
over-dyed with black dye, rinsed, and air dried. Angora top and combings were dyed with acid
dye, rinsed and air dried. Wool was hand picked to open and angora
top was torn into pieces. All fibers were carded into batts using
a drumcarder. Batts were sectioned and drafted into sliver.
Reason for Choice of this Sample: Wool was from my own animal.
the angora top adds softness to the blend and the combings, although
short, add texture. A pretty blend even though the angora combings
had more shorts than expected and significant loss during carding.
Finishing: Yarn
was wound onto a skeiner,
washed, and hung to dry. Dried yarn
was beaten over the living
room chair to halo the angora.
Length of yarn:
Suggested Uses: This would be a good accent yarn in an
intarsia knitting design. Perhaps diamond shapes on the front of a
dark brown-black sweater. You could also use this yarn for the
body of a knitted beret. It would not be suitable for the beret
band or for placement on portions of the sweater receiving heavy wear.
The shortest angora fibers would most likely pill and shed.
